a move which has not gone down well with the teaching fraternity.
According to AMC School Board Administrator, LD Desai, 100 school teachers have been deployed across hospitals, where they will be manning the help desks mainly to carry out coordination. “In a global pandemic situation, every resource needs to be put in use,” Desai said.
Teachers’ services have been sought earlier also for various Covid-related duties in the city to undertake surveys as well as ration distribution from ration shops. However, their deployment at hospitals has not gone down well with many.
Speaking to ET, Bhaskar Patel, president, Gujarat State School Management Federation (1960) maintained that teachers are being put to serious health risks with four teachers already having lost their lives after contracting the virus during their Covid duties.
“AMC Commissioner is well within his right to deploy teachers wherever he wants to.
But it would have been good if their lives were not risked while attending such duties,” Patel said.
Speaking to ET on condition of anonymity, one such teacher, who has been deployed at a private hospital in the city maintained that while such deployments has become a part of their job description, they also carry out co-ordination with chairmen of housing societies where Covid-positive cases have been detected.
They also have to accompany medical teams when apositive case is reported.
The teacher maintained that while they are expected to wear PPE kits, many of her colleagues have been denied such protection gear.
